About Dr. Gelbart and The Potent Mind

Board-Certified Psychiatrist | Over 30 Years of Clinical Experience | APA Life Fellow

I’m Dr. Jerry Gelbart, a board-certified psychiatrist with more than three decades of experience helping individuals improve their mental health through personalized, evidence-based care. My practice is grounded in a BioPsychoSocioSpiritual perspective, integrating biology, psychology, relationships, and spirituality to support deep, lasting change.

Over the years, I’ve served as a medical director, teacher, and thought leader, and have worked across a wide range of clinical settings—from emergency rooms and inpatient hospitals to outpatient consultation and collaborative care with family medicine residents. I’ve taught psychiatry and lifestyle medicine to both professionals and the public, with a focus on combining psychotherapy, medications, and wellness strategies with potent insights that maximize synergy and reduce suffering.

My approach is warm, active, and collaborative. Whether we’re exploring cognitive-behavioral tools, mindful attention, or refining a medication regimen, I aim to help each patient feel heard, understood, and empowered. I offer remote consultations for adults throughout California, with services including psychiatric evaluation, medication management, ADHD assessments (including QbCheck), and integrative psychotherapy.

I’ve also written and presented on a variety of topics, including mindfulness in treatment, digital psychiatry, behavioral change, and the interactions between psychotherapy and pharmacology. I continue to teach and consult with U. C.. Davis-affiliated medical residents and have been recognized as a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

The Potent Mind is my mental health education brand, offering clear, evidence-based resources -- podcasts, CD, articles, and videos-- that turn psychiatric science into practical tools for everyday well-being.

When I’m not working, I enjoy creating educational content, exploring the outdoors with my devoted terrier, and deepening my own mindfulness practice.
